Collection: Agapanthus (Pick up only)

Agapanthus for the Brisbane and SE Queensland Gardens

Agapanthus (Agapanthus africanus and related species) is one of the most reliable and spectacular flowering plants you can grow in Brisbane's subtropical climate. Bold, architectural, and virtually indestructible once established, agapanthus delivers stunning displays of blue, purple, or white trumpet-shaped flowers atop tall, elegant stems — typically from late spring through summer, just when the garden needs a lift.

Brisbane's warm temperatures, high humidity, and long summers suit agapanthus beautifully. These tough plants tolerate heat, drought, and neglect with ease, making them a favourite for low-maintenance gardens, sloped sites, and mass plantings across South East Queensland.

Growing tips for Brisbane:

  • Plant in full sun to part shade — morning sun with afternoon shade works particularly well in Brisbane's intense summer heat
  • Agapanthus tolerates most soil types but performs best with good drainage; avoid waterlogged positions during our wet season
  • Water regularly during the first season to establish roots, then reduce — mature plants are highly drought-tolerant
  • Divide clumps every 3–5 years to maintain vigour and encourage prolific flowering
  • Remove spent flower heads to keep plants tidy; leave foliage intact as it feeds the bulb for next season's display
  • Agapanthus can be mildly invasive — choose sterile or low-seed varieties if planting near bushland or waterways

Whether used as a bold garden border, a striking pot specimen, or a mass planting on a difficult slope, agapanthus brings reliable colour and structure to Brisbane gardens year after year.
